Excellent Cd ripper, audio encoder, and Mp3 decoder in one. While CDex is bundled with the decent LAME encoder, it also supports a wide variety of encoding schemes including Mp2, Wma, Vqf, and Aac. In addition, it can utilize encoders by such companies as Xing and Fraunhofer. CDex is one of few programs which supports VBR through LAME, along with every bitrate above 32kbps. The bundled Mp3 to Wav decoder is fast and very accurate, as is the Wav normalizer (for ripping all of your Cd tracks at the same volume). CDex displays its information in a very clean way. It clearly states the artist, album, and song titles which are accessed from its included Cddb database function. The Gui is very well-thought and easy to use for beginners. However, looking at a program such as Audiograbber, options like Id3 tagging and line-in sampling seem very essential to a Cd ripper. Neither preference is offered in CDex.

Audiograbber doubles as a beautiful digital Cd ripper and an audio encoder (which is usable through special codecs available on the internet). In addition, it is bundled with a free Wma encoder and Pcm converter. An excellent Id3 tagger and a Wav normalizer assist greatly in making the Mp3s. Time offset and fade in/out are just other preferences which put Audiograbber ahead of its competition. However, it is the line-in sampling mode which really sets this product out from the others. This feature allows audio formats like vinyl, tape, Minidisc, etc., to be recorded on Audiograbber through the line-in jack on your soundcard. Setting this process up could not be made any easier, and afterwards, Audiograbber will even encode the recorded Wav into a preferred format such as Wma or Mp3. In the unregistered version of this program, only 7 tracks of a Cd are available for ripping. At $25 for the full version, though, you just can't go wrong with purchasing Audiograbber.
